About Stun Gun Voltage
With over 30 years in the self defense industry and 20 years of service with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, my experience is built on real world use, tactical instruction, and hands on testing. I recommend what works, not what sounds good on a box.
Manufacturers list voltage ratings for each model, and we post those ratings as provided. Voltage numbers do not tell the whole story. Real performance depends on design, circuit quality, and power delivery, not just a printed number on a box.
We do not independently certify maximum voltage, so we cannot guarantee manufacturer claims. Instead, every model we carry is evaluated through practical testing that focuses on construction, consistency of the arc, and real world effectiveness. My goal is simple: to sell reliable defensive tools that work when you need them, not products that rely on inflated numbers.

Understanding Stun Guns
Stun guns have been used for personal protection for decades, and law enforcement has relied on similar technology since the late 1980s. A stun gun is an electrical self defense device that delivers a high voltage, low current charge designed to cause pain, confusion, and temporary muscle disruption.
When a stun gun makes contact, electricity travels between the probes and through the attacker’s body. The farther apart the contact points are, the greater the effect on the muscle groups in between. This is why devices such as TASER® products, which fire projectiles that spread before impact, can drop a target more quickly — the current passes through more muscle mass.
How Stun Guns Work
The electric current causes rapid muscle contractions. The body reacts by tightening up and using stored energy at a fast rate. This converts blood sugar into lactic acid, which quickly depletes the body’s ability to generate energy. Within a few seconds of direct contact, an assailant can lose coordination and strength, creating an opportunity to escape or gain control of the situation.
The loud crackling sound of a stun gun also has a strong psychological effect. In many situations, the sound alone is enough to scare off an attacker or animal before any contact is made.
Power and Safety
Although voltage numbers may sound high, the actual current delivered by civilian stun guns is very low — typically around three to four milliamps. One amp can be lethal, so this output is well below the threshold for permanent injury. Stun guns are classified as less lethal defensive tools designed to cause pain and temporary incapacitation, not death.
Even if an assailant is touching you, the current will not transfer through their body to you. There is no “shock back” effect. When a stun gun is used on a person, the energy is absorbed entirely by the target.
Proper Use and Care
A stun gun is intended for close quarters defense and works best when pressed firmly against the body for several seconds. Short contact will cause pain and often force the attacker to retreat, but longer contact produces stronger effects.
When testing or displaying a stun gun, never discharge it into the air for more than one second at a time. Repeated dry firing for longer periods can damage the internal components and void the warranty.
Most modern stun guns are rechargeable, while some compact models use long life lithium batteries with a shelf life of up to ten years. Always follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions and store the unit in a cool, dry place.
Warranty and Reliability
Nearly all stun guns we sell are covered by a lifetime warranty. Warranty details are listed in each product’s specifications. We stand behind every product we offer and work only with manufacturers that deliver proven reliability and consistent output.
Choosing the Right Defense Tool
Stun guns are effective close range devices, but they require physical contact and several seconds of engagement to stop an attacker. For faster and safer defense, we always recommend carrying pepper spray as your first line of protection whenever possible.
Our DPS Defense Spray is professional grade and trusted by law enforcement and correctional officers across the country. It acts in one to two seconds and keeps an assailant incapacitated for up to thirty minutes. In most cases, pepper spray is legal to carry and provides a safe distance advantage.
At J & L Self Defense Products, we care about real world safety, not just making a sale. Stun guns and defense sprays both serve important roles in personal protection, and our goal is to help you choose the tool that works best for your needs.
